Dunki & Salaar Box Office Analysis: Salaar Hit And Dunki Flop?? Kya Pit Gayi SRK ki surest hit film Aur Kya Rebel Star Prabhas Ne Maar di Baazi

 

Money is pouring in blindly. Bro, both Salaar and Dunki are earning together and behind the scenes, fan wars have also started. Many interesting observations are also going to come out. So, Let's start analyzing the box office numbers of both. Shahrukh Khan's Dunki was released on 21st December, it earned Rs 29 crores on the first day, which is commendable for a non-holiday and mid-week which is on Thursday but we cannot ignore the fact that it is actually lower than Director Raju Hirani's previous movie Sanju which released on 29th June, 2018 and was a non-holiday release, still earned Rs 34.75 crores whereas Dunki opened with Rs. 29.2 crores.

In fact, Dunki's opening on Friday is not much ahead of Mr. Perfectionist Aamir Khan’s PK movie which was released on 19th December, 2014 but still earned 26 crores, two reasons can be given for Dunki's opening. Firstly, Clash has had an impact, even though it was released a day earlier, but many people watch only one movie in weeks and months and they probably got hold of it for the next day. Salaar was about to come, plus another reason for its outcome was that the promotional material of Dunki was lower than expected, that is why Day One only Rs. 29.2 crores could be accumulated. Dunki was released around 4000 screens.

Now on Day Two, this number further falls to Rs 20.12 crores because Friday is a working day, Salaar was also released and got around 6000 screens, All India Day 3 Saturday collections increased to Rs. 25.61 crores, Day 4 Sunday increased to ₹30.7 crores. Day number five also got around ₹24.32 crores, this was how the Christmas holiday was. Its total all India net collection for 5 days is around 130 crores. If you feel that these numbers are low then it is sure. Pathaan had earned Rs. 127.5 crores crores in two days which were Wednesday and Thursday of which the second day was a holiday for Republic Day. The opening weekend was of 5 days in which a total of 280 crores were earned. Talking about Jawan, it earned 128 crores in the first two days which were Thursday and Friday in which the first day was partial holiday for Janmashtami except the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Pondicherry and West Bengal.

It had earned Rs 286 crore in the total opening weekend of four days. If you feel that the collection of Shahrukh Khan's latest movie is less then let me remind you that this is the total collection of five days if we talk only about the opening weekend. Which was of four days, so it becomes Rs. 105.63 crores. Let’s do one thing that is not compare with Jawan And Pathaan. If Sanju is taken in the picture, it had made 120 crores in the opening weekend in three days that to 5 years ago, Infact PK, which is a 9 year old film had an opening week was Rs 95.4 crores, so Dunki's numbers are actually much lower than expected but it also gives itself a reality check on how big a gap has become between movies with action and movies without action in today's time.

This is about earning potential and such thing was not there in the case of Hindi movies for a very long time, on which I have extracted the complete data that is for Hindi movies past 15 years: Highest Nett India Hindi Movies:

2013 Chennai Express- 227 crores

2013 Dhoom 3- 284 crores

Action Movies Time At Top= 3 and half

Non-Action Movies Time At Top= 11 and half

This above table shows that even after the release of such big action movies of the actor, the drama movies remained on top for the majority of the time, that is why people were hoping that Shahrukh Khan's Dunki movie will also earn Rs 1000 crores world wide is not possible.

The weekend producer figure is Rs. 211.13 crores and if it plays like Jawan from here onwards then it can go up to 486 to 500 crores worldwide. Net collection within India is 235-240 crores. If you add the factor of director Rajkumar Hirani in the equation then it will be 10 or 15%  Extra on ₹235 crores which will be Rs. 250 Crore India Net Collection or a little more. Now it is less than half of Pathaan which was Rs. 543 crores And let's not even talk about Jawan’s 640 crores but it will most likely become the third highest grossing movie of Superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s career. The highest grossing films for SRK are Jawan’s Rs. 640 crores, Pathaan’s Rs. 543 crores than Dunki’s ₹235-250 crores Expected, followed by Chennai Express- 227 crores and Happy New Year’s Rs. 203 crores. If you like it, don't get me wrong, it should have done better and looking at the overall numbers, it will be considered a disappointment.

PK's was 340 crores and Sanju's was 342 crores only in India. If you had asked anyone a year ago, he would have said that the surest short hit for Shahrukh Khan in 2023 is Dunki, but out of all his three pictures released this year and that to By A Big Margin. Yet, I would like to focus on one very important thing here that we don't know how it will perform in long term, if it showed hold like PK movie or the collections which were less in the beginning because of the clash. That audience started coming later, if they do come slowly then anything can happen, the collections may even go till ₹300 crores in India only. This whole image will be clear by next Monday and if you want to give such a small hope to the die-hard fans, then who knows when this picture will be released in China and if it connects with the audience then it may go to world wide Rs. 1000 crores.

There can be another good news for the fans of SRK, which I will tell later, let's first see the collections of Salaar and pay attention because the numbers. It is going to be very crazy, a while ago I said that what is the gap between action and non-action, here is its four day collections= 

Day 1- 90.7 crores

Day 2- 56.35 crores

Day 3- 62.05 crores

Day 4- 45.8 crores 

Which will bring the total to Rs. 254.9 crores, possibly it has already crossed the life time collection of Dunki.

Majority of these 255 crores collections came from two languages, the first of which you can see in Telugu: Day 1- 66.75 crores, Day 2- 34.25 crores, Day 3- 35 crores, Day 4- 27.1 crores. The total collection in Telugu till today is 163 crores which was also expected as it is Rebel Star Prabhas’s Home Market. The second major collection coming from the Hindi version which is Day 1- 15.75 crores, Day 2- 16.35 crores, Day 3- 21.10 crores and Day 4- 14.5 crores which brings the total to 67.7 crores. for which Prabhas and the director and producer of KGF are responsible. Considering that no universe was created with KGF, yet this collection is nice considering the clash with Dunki, but whatever is said on Dunki applies here also that Clash has incurred losses and if you want to give an idea of how much it could have earned in Hindi collections, then look at the collections of Adipurush that in three days only the Hindi Version had earned Rs 110 crores. If you take Saaho movie for an example then it also earned 80 crore Hindi net in the opening week, Salaar's 67 crores could have been better than that without any clash.

Still if you go to see the Biggest Day One India net collection Of This Whole Year then, Animal is at number five with net collection- 63.8 crores, Leo at number four with net figures of 64.8 crores, Jawan at number three with net figures at 75 crores, Adipurush At Number Two with net collections of 86.75 crores and Salaar at number one world wide with net figures of 90.7 crores. Salaar has also made some massive records. Now I am going to quote the producer figure about which I am going to tell you how much of it is right, how much is wrong, how much is more or less, you can see as per your own opinion, but Salaar grossed Rs 178.7 crore Worldwide On Day One, which is simply the biggest of 2023 for comparison, Pathaan's collections on Day 1 were ₹106 crores, Jawan's was 129 crores and Leo's 148 crores. Infact, this number is so impressive that if you go to see the all time record of Day One World Wide then it is at number three only behind RRR- 223 crores and Bahubali 2’s 217 crores and On Number 4 is KGF Chapter 2 with 159 crores.

Again the same thing that if there was no clash with Dunki, then it would have been Rs 200 crores. After analysing the numbers all day long, I have discovered a very interesting fact. If you look at the Number 1 and Number 2, then it is S.S. Rajamouli's movies, Number 3 and Number 4 are Prashant Neel's movies whose both movies have part twos. The Worldwide Opening Weekend of Salaar which was of three days is 402 crores. To remind you, Dunki got four days and it earned only ₹212.13 crores but this 402 crores of Salaar is not very mind blowing. Because it is at number six with KGF 2 leading the table with 546 crores then, Pathaan’s 543 crores, Baahubali 2’s 540 crores, RRR’s 500 crores, Jawan’s 520 crores and then again for Salaar, Important Note is that KGF Chapter Two and Jawan got four days, Pathaan got five days and the remaining movies got three days and when we see the numbers of only three days. So Baahubali 2 is the undisputed king with 540 crores and that Baahubali 2 was such a big game changer, a turning point in the entire Indian cinema history. It is difficult to understand because even after so many years of its release, it is almost impossible to touch its numbers and it opened the doors in a way. In the entire history till date of earning Rs. 100 crores on day one, only 10 movies have made Rs. 100 crores worldwide on day one.

The first of them is RRR and then Baahubali 2, Salaar, KGF Chapter 2, LEO, Adipurush, Saaho, Jawan, Animal and Pathaan. This year alone six movies have crossed this figure, out of which two are of Shahrukh Khan- Pathaan And Jawan, Prabhas's two movies-Adipurush And Salaar then Animal and Leo and no matter how much you make fun of the internet, the stardom that Bahubali 2 has given to Prabhas cannot be underestimated because even if the picture is bad, one thing will always be guaranteed that Prabhas's pictures will open big . If you have noticed, out of the total 10, Rebel Star Prabhas has four, Superstar Shahrukh Khan has two and all the other actors have one each. Now, let's talk about Salaar's expectations which are about how much it can earn and this is going to be quite tricky because just a few months ago I got to see a very surprising example which is that Leo movie opened very well and earned a lot of money in the first five days and after that it ended like literally disappeared but this is an extreme case scenario.

Regarding Salaar, I personally feel that it should double the opening weekend i.e. 500 crores and if India net collection shows a good hold around then maybe 520-540 crores. If you have been reading my blogs for some time, then you must have clicked that the number is a little less, yes, it is less because in this one year, three Hindi movies earned more than Rs 500 crore in Hindi alone, Pathaan, Jawan and Gadar 2 and Salaar, yes, it had a bigger opening than the three but after that there was a good drop in the collections. Four day total including Christmas holiday came to Rs 255 crores which is less than the first four days Collections of Jawan which is 286 crores. In fact, it is closer to Animal’s Four day collection which was 245 crores. Salaar's fourth day which was a national holiday i.e. Christmas, it earned 46 crores on that day whereas Animal's fourth day was Monday, a normal working day without any holiday, it earned 44 crores, so this movie of Prabhas is not going to show a hold like Animal.

Even today in the midst of this clash, Animal has earned Rs. 5 crores in the last three days, that too after the majority screen has gone, so if by mistake Salaar or Dunki falls in the next three-four days, then Animal and Sam Bahadur will take advantage of them. This is why a end number for either of the films is very hard to predict.. It becomes even more difficult to do because you don't have any idea and there are so many options in front of the audience that if anyone shows a little crack then the whole wall will be left. Still for Salaar, Worldwide collections should go about 800 crores plus. If the audience likes it a lot then it can go up to 1000 crores but it will remain below that I believe, now what does this mean, I am talking about Indian movies of 2023 in all languages, I am talking about the world wide collections that if you go to see it. So Jawan at number one, Pathaan at Number 2 and Salaar will not be able to touch Pathaan atleast not till 31st December. The collections of Dunki and Salaar in the overseas market is:

I am thinking that what if they avoid the clash or Salaar which had its original release date in September and then the wave that is going on among the fans who have set everything on fire, would not have happened.
